Play spaces

Screen

These are the questions we answer during the Screen stage.

Answering them wil help us learn more about the Play spaces consideration, determine if a data standard is required and whether we know enough to move on to the next stage.

  • What is the 'Play spaces' consideration?

Designated areas for children and young people containing a range of facilities and an environment that has been designed to provide focused opportunities for outdoor play, including Local Areas for Play (LAPs), Local Equipped Area for Play (LEAPs), -Neighbourhood Equipped Area for Play (NEAPs) and Multi-use Games Area (MUGAs)

  • Is there legislation that defines 'Play spaces'?

    No

  • Who, in law, is responsible for the planning consideration or makes decisions about 'Play spaces'?

We found nothing in legislation, but we think that as local authorities typically manage these spaces, decisions on their provision and development are their responsibility.

  • Which organisations do we think should publish the data?

    • Local authorities

  • Is the Play spaces a trigger?

    No

  • Is the Play spaces something to consult during plan making?

    Yes

    • Provide information about when Play spaces is used during plan making

LPAs are likely to manage/own many of the play spaces within the borough, and therefore will hold data on play space provision. The presence of these will likely be assessed through an open space study and/or an Infrastructure Delivery Plan, and when planning for growth, new provision will be modelled, and be expected to be delivered through development.

  • Is there any Play spaces data already available?

    Yes

  • Do we think the data should come from a single source?

Yes, the data already exists nationally and openly. As per some research summarised in this blog, we will use the national data in the interim, but long term would like to collect this data from LPAs.

  • Will a data standard be required?

    No
